Java is het dichtstbevolkte eiland van Indonesië.
Op dit eiland ligt ook de nationale hoofdstad, Yakarta. Op het plein Medan Merdeka (Vrijheidsplein) bevinden zich de voornaamste monumenten van deze levendige stad.
De meest toeristische stad van Java is Yogyakarta, waar u het Kraton, of Paleis van de Sultan, kunt bezoeken, met een prachtige tuin en het Tamansari waterkasteel. Het noordelijke gedeelte van de stad is moderner, maar er zijn nog steeds gebouwen uit de Nederlandse koloniale tijd, evenals commerciële centra.
De markt Jalan Malioboro wordt druk bezocht door de toeristen.
Andere interessante steden zijn: Bandoeng; Semarang; Soerabaya; Cirebon; Pekalongan; Sukabumi en Soerakarta.
Veertig kilometer in noordwestelijke richting ligt Borobudur, het grootste boeddhistische monument ter wereld, 42 meter hoog, gelegen op een heuvel tussen twee vulkanen. Het wordt beschouwd als een van de wereldwonderen. Een ander interessant circuit op centraal Java is Prambanan, een verzameling van 240 aan Shivá gewijde tempels, die op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst staan.
De witte zandstranden zijn prachtig en rustig. De absolute aanrader onder de stranden is Pangandaran. Er zijn ook safari’s en excursies naar de vulkanen, inclusief warwaterbad.
