De stad ligt langs de rivier de Ping, de belangrijkste zijstroom van de rivier de Chao Phraya, dat weer een van de grootste rivieren van Thailand is.
Chiang Mai is de op twee na grootste stad van het land en ligt ongeveer 800 kilometer ten noorden van Bangkok, in een mooi berglandschap. Het oude stadscentrum is nog steeds het belangrijkste deel van de stad. Dit is een gebied vol tempels, met oude verdedigingswerken eromheen. Maar het is ook een moderne stad, met een goede infrastructuur, boordevol winkels, heel goede restaurants en grote hotels. Dit alles vormt een groot contrast, maar maakt deel uit van de charme van Chiang Mai. Enkele van de meest bezochte tempels zijn: Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, uit 1383, die de bekendste is, gelegen op een heuvel met schitterend uitzicht op de stad; en de tempel Wat Chiang Man, de oudste tempel in de stad.
