Chiang Rai ligt in het noorden van Thailand en is vermaard om de berglandschappen, de stammen die er wonen en de imposante watervallen.
De rivier de Kok stroomt door de stad. De rivieren Mae Sai en Ruak vormen de grenzen van de provincie Chiang Rai met Myanmar en Laos, de zogenaamde Gouden Driehoek.

De hoogste waterval bevindt zich in het bosreservaat Khun Korn, evenals de grotten Tham Pum-Tham Pla, Tham Phayanak en Tham Pha Chom: allemaal spectaculaire plekken met een overdaad aan veelkleurige rotsen en stalactieten.
