Kanchanaburi is een stad in Thailand, 150 kilometer van Bangkok, op de grens met Myanmar. Dit is een berg- en woudgebied, waar de spoorweg dwars doorheen loopt die de Japanners tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog hebben laten aanleggen door voornamelijk Britse, Australische en Nederlandse krijgsgevangen, de beruchte Birma spoorweg.
Deze spoorlijn loopt over de rivier de Kwai, waarnaar de beroemde film Bridge on the River Kwai genoemd is. Tussen de brug en het centrum van de stad bevindt zich de Oorlogsbegraafplaats, waar veel van de slachtoffers van de aanleg begraven liggen. In de nabijheid zijn vele restaurants te vinden voor de talrijke bezoekers aan deze plek. In de bergen van Kanchanaburi liggen vele woudhotels, waar de avonturiers een uitstekende uitvalsbasis hebben om tropische wandeltochten te maken.
Het Nationaal Park Thungyai staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de VN. Op de rivier de Kwai drijven exotische bungalows waar het heerlijk overnachten is. U kunt ook tochtjes per vlot over de rivier maken en zelfs per olifant door het woud.
Ook is het mogelijk inheemse nederzettingen van de Mon of Karen te bezoeken. In de centrale regio van Thailand wemelt het van de watervallen. Bij de Nam Tok waterval is een Boeddhistisch monument ter nagedachtenis aan de slachtoffers van de Birma spoorlijn, ook bekend als de Dodenspoorlijn.
