Cappadocië is een historische regio in Turkije, die op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst staat. De streek ligt tussen Aksaray, Nigde, Nevsehir en Kayseri en kenmerkt zich door het vreemde en unieke vulkanische landschap, dat door de eeuwen heen gevormd is door het effect van de erosie en de invloed van de mens.
Hier hebben diverse beschavingen de scepter gezwaaid, zoals de Assyriërs, Hitieten, Perzen, de hellenistische koninkrijken, Romeinen, Byzantijnen, en Seltsjoeken. Allen hebben hun (culturele) sporen achtergelaten. U kunt er de fascinerende ondergrondse steden Kaymakli en Derinkuyu ontdekken. Dit zijn de belangrijkste twee. Voor het grootste deel liggen ze op 45 meter diepte. Er woonden 20 duizend mensen.
Ook kunt u het indrukwekkende openluchtmuseum van Göreme bewonderen, met in de rotsen uitgehouwen bouwwerken uit de 3e en 4e eeuw n. Chr. In de kerken zijn de fresco’s uitstekend bewaard gebleven dankzij het gebrek aan licht.
De grotwoningen van het dal Zelve; Peribacalar Vadisi, het dal met de sprookjesachtige schoorstenen: werkelijk alles in Cappadocië zal u het gevoel geven dat u zich in een buitenaards landschap bevindt, alles is aantrekkelijk en tegelijkertijd vreemd. U kunt zelfs in een grot uit de 5e eeuw overnachten, maar natuurlijk ook in comfortabele vijfsterrenhotels. Er zijn tal van uitstekende restaurants, bars en discotheken.
En als u geen hoogtevrees heeft, dan kunt u een schitterende excursie per heteluchtballon maken. Cappadocië vanuit de lucht is fantastisch mooi!
